A new medical complex at the Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre in Cairo will be named in honour of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

This tribute comes in recognition of a AED 220 million donation from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI). This latest contribution raises MBRGI's total support for the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation to AED 320 million.

The donation will fund the completion of the new complex, significantly expanding the centre’s capacity to treat 120,000 outpatients and perform 12,000 surgeries annually, reaching a total of 132,000 patients each year.

The complex, located in 6th of October City, Egypt, will span approximately 37 acres and focus on treating newborns with congenital heart defects, increasing their chances of survival to 95 per cent.

It will include 300 additional beds and 36 new outpatient clinics, aiming to triple the number of healthcare professionals trained annually to 1,750, with a goal of training 2,625 professionals in total.

The centre is also developing the Middle East’s largest cardiac research and innovation hub, which will focus on advanced treatments for complex heart diseases and congenital conditions.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of non-communicable deaths, claiming around 1.5 million lives annually in Africa and accounting for 40 per cent of deaths in Egypt alone.
