UAE launches polar research project

The UAE has launched a polar research project to strengthen its position as a leader in the field.

Announced during the UAE Government’s Annual Meetings 2024, the Emirates Polar Programme was developed over the past year in collaboration with several government bodies and Khalifa University.

The government entities involved in the project include the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs and the National Centre of Meteorology.

The project incorporates input from scientists, experts and diplomats to define key research priorities encompassing scientific, technological and commercial applications.

Mariam Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court and Chair of the UAE Polar Mission Steering Committee, revealed plans to establish a Polar Research Centre at Khalifa University and build global partnerships for future missions.

She also confirmed that two Emiratis will begin an Antarctic mission on November 7, with another mission to the Arctic planned for 2025.

Almheiri highlighted the project’s role in boosting the UAE's scientific presence, supporting climate action and inspiring future generations of Emirati scientists.
