The UAE's 'Great Arab Minds' award in medicine for 2024 has been awarded to Professor Yasmine Belkaid for her exceptional contributions to immunology.

Her groundbreaking research has significantly advanced the understanding of how microbes interact with the immune system, particularly the role of skin-resident microbes in strengthening immune defences against infections.

Professor Belkaid's work also focuses on the link between microbiome imbalances and chronic diseases, and she has contributed to the development of effective preventive and therapeutic strategies.

With over 220 scientific papers published, her research has had a profound impact on the fields of infection, immunity, microbiota, and nutrition.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, congratulated Professor Belkaid, who is the President of the Institut Pasteur in France.

He emphasized the Arab region's long-standing legacy in producing world-class medical professionals, and urged Arab youth to be inspired by these exceptional figures and their commitment to advancing human health.

Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, UAE Minister of Cabinet Affairs, informed Professor Belkaid of her award via video call, praising her dedication to advancing scientific research and medical knowledge.

The Great Arab Minds Award, launched by Sheikh Mohammed, aims to celebrate the achievements of outstanding Arab individuals across six categories, including medicine, economics, natural sciences, engineering and technology, architecture and design, and literature and arts.
