Steve Smith's magnificent innings of 211 has put Australia in a strong position after day two of the fourth Ashes test at Manchester.

The tourists declared their first innings on 497 for 8 before leaving England on 23 for 1 at the end of the day's play.

The five match series is tied 1-1 meaning a win for Australia at Old Trafford will see them retain the Ashes.

Day three gets underway on Friday at 2 pm UAE time.
