New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will miss the upcoming Twenty20 series against England due to a hip injury.

Bowler Tim Southee will lead the team in Williamson's absence.

"It's disappointing timing for Kane at the start of an exciting Kiwi summer, but we feel it's the right decision with a busy season ahead," Coach Gary Stead said, adding that it was the same injury that affected him during the Test series against Bangladesh in March.

"We're fortunate to have someone experienced like Tim who can comfortably step in and take the reins."

Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has been named for the first three games while Trent Boult will be in the squad for the fourth and fifth matches.

The series begins on Friday, November 1, in Christchurch.
