The batsman who ended New Zealand's dream of winning the World Cup was born in Christchurch.

The 28-year-old was named Man of the Match for his role in England's dramatic win over New Zealand on Sunday.

Stokes was born in Christchurch but moved to England when he was 12.

While the official list is yet to be announced, the awards Chief Judge Cameron Bennett said it was obvious some were still trying to claim Stokes as one of New Zealand's own.

Kiwi captain Kane Williamson is also amongst the nominees.

A shortlist of 10 candidates will be announced in December, while the winner will be revealed at the New Zealander of the Year Gala Awards in February.
