A school worker in the US has been jailed for stealing chicken wings worth $1.5 million over the course of a year.

Vera Liddell stole 11,000 cases of chicken wings, which were meant to be for students during the COVID pandemic, but were instead taken by the 68-year-old.

Liddell's scheme was only uncovered after a business manager noticed food costs had soared over budget by $300,000 during a routine audit.

The school worker had used a van to pick up the haul, during a period where schools were closed yet the district was still sending out meals to students studying remotely.

Liddle, who was the head of food service at the district, pled guilty to the charge and was given a nine-year jail sentence.
