Not just cargo, Air New Zealand to now weigh passengers before boarding

Air New Zealand has introduced a new boarding procedure that requires passengers to step on a scale before boarding certain flights departing from Auckland International Airport, according to a statement from the airline.

The implementation of this procedure aims to achieve a better balance of weight across the aircraft during international flights. The airline emphasised that knowing the precise weight of the aircraft is crucial for calculating fuel consumption, and having accurate information about passengers' weight contributes to a safer flight.

In a public announcement, Alastair James, Air New Zealand's load control improvement specialist, reassured passengers that there is nothing to be concerned about regarding the weighing process. He explained that for safety reasons, it is necessary to determine the weight of all items onboard the aircraft, including passengers, crew and carry-on bags.

Air New Zealand relies on average weights obtained through a periodic survey conducted every five years for passengers, crew and carry-on bags. The airline stated that this move is in compliance with the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand's regulations governing aircraft operations, which require operators to establish the total weight of passengers and their carry-on baggage.

James further clarified in the statement, "It's a regulatory requirement for us to know the weight of everything that goes on the aircraft. From the cargo to the meals on board to the luggage in the hold. By weighing in, you'll be helping us fly safely and efficiently every time."

Notably, passengers' weights are neither visible to themselves nor to airline personnel. The weight information is directly inputted into a computer and recorded anonymously. Additionally, the data is not linked to any passenger's name or profile in a database.

Air New Zealand emphasised that participation in the weighing process is entirely voluntary. The airline assured passengers that the weighing process, which occurs at the departure gate, will not cause any flight delays. In June, more than 10,000 customers traveling internationally will be invited to participate in the weight survey.

The survey commenced on Monday and will continue until July 2.

Air New Zealand had previously implemented passenger weighing for domestic flights in 2021, and now with international travel resuming, the airline is extending the procedure to international flyers as well.
