Rescue workers have been carrying out extensive searches in Alabama after a devastating tornado killed at least 23 people, and destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses in the region.

More than 50 people have been reported injured, with officials adding that the death toll could rise further.

Sheriff Jay Jones of Lee County said several people were still unaccounted for, and rescue crews were sorting through the debris.

Meanwhile, New Jersey has declared a state of emergency and announced the closure of all schools as another arctic blast is headed to the region.
