Alberto Fujimori, the former President of Peru, has died at the age of 86, his daughter has confirmed.

Fujimori served as president from 1990 to 2000 before being forced from office amid allegations of corruption.

His tough stance against a left-wing guerrilla insurgency while president also brought allegations of human rights abuses. He was imprisoned for over 15 years of a 25-year sentence before his release in December 2022 due to a reinstated presidential pardon.

But his supporters praise him for defeating the rebels at a time when they looked likely to seize power.

Fujimori's daughter, Keiko Fujimori, who leads Peru's major political party, announced his death on social media, describing it as the end of a long battle with cancer.
