The Rolling Stones have postponed their tour of the US and Canada so that frontman Mick Jagger can receive medical treatment.

In a statement, the band said doctors had advised Jagger not to tour.

Jagger took to his social media platforms to apologise directly to his fans.

"I really hate letting you down like this," he wrote. "I'm devastated for having to postpone the tour but I will be working very hard to be back on stage as soon as I can."

The nature of the 75-year-old singer’s ailment was not revealed.

The 17-concert “No Filter” tour was scheduled to kick off in Miami on April 20.
